Congressman Adolph J. Sabath today told the Jewish Daily Bulletin that he will not press his eligibility for the Speaker ship of the House, a post vacated by the death of Henry T. Rainey.
Sabath, now dean of the House of Representatives said: “In view of present conditions and despite the fact that I am the oldest member of the House of Representatives and, from the viewpoint of seniority, am in line for the Speaker ship, I will not press the matter.
“I prefer not to be in the rostrum,” he said.
The Congressman said that he would not enter the race for the Speaker ship unless matters became so tangled that his entrance would help straighten them out.
He will leave tonight to attend the funeral of the late Mr. Rainey at Carrollton, Ill.
Others leaving Chicago for the funeral will be members of the McCormack Congressional Committee to Investigate Un-American Activities, which held executive sessions here this morning. Governor Henry Horner will leave Springfield for the burial.
