An Orthodox Jewish woman in New York has won an appeal from a ruling denying her unemployment compensation because she resigned from a job in preference to working after sundown on Friday, the American Jewish Congress reported today.
Miss Adele Scheimald resigned from her position after her employer found it impossible to allow her to leave early on Fridays. Her unemployment compensation application was rejected on the ground that she resigned “without good cause.” An appeal was made, with the A.J.C. providing a counsel, and the referee in the case agreed that the woman’s right to freedom of religion was impaired by the original ruling. Miss Scheimald has been declared eligible for unemployment compensation benefits.
