Site to Be Expropriated for Erection of a College (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
The ancient cemetery of the Jewish community of Salonica is now in danger of being removed to provide a site for the erection of a college building, a part of the University of Salonica.
Dean Bijondikes has asked the Athens authorities to expropriate the cemetery land. The Jewish community, in a memorandum to the Central Government protested against the plan. Another site can easily be found, without offending Jewish sentiments, they argue. Thousands of families organize pilgrimages to the cemetery annually. Parts of the cemetery are still in use.
