The creation of a “Jewish vote” in the Greek national elections was opposed by the Jewish community of Salonica, according to a report from Athens to the “Paix et Droit,” the organ of the Alliance Israelite Universelle.
The Greek government recently promulgated a decree, according to which Jews and Turks in Salonica were prohibited from voting with the rest of the citizens, but were to form special electoral units. The Jewish community protested against this decree and the Jewish electors decided to refrain from the elections. Following this the government modified the electoral system, permitting the Jews to vote on the same list with the others. Nevertheless, a Jewish minority party was formed in Athens.
