An offer of help from Salonican Jews resident in New York, cabled through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency to the pogrom-stricken Jewish community of Saloniki, greatly moved the leaders of the community tonight. Deputy Bessantchi, with the cable in his hand, immediately called on Elie Benusiglio, president of the Jewish Communal Council, who called that body into immediate session to prepare a reply to the New York offer.
In the meantime a Greco-jewish league has been formed to clear up the misunderstanding between the two races. The first meeting of the league will be held Saturday.
At the same time the investigation into the attack on the Campbell quarter, June 29, is proceeding slowly. Today the examining magistrate quizzed a Christian chauffeur who is alleged to have been one of the ringleaders of the attack on the Jewish quarter. Both the Jewish and Greek press are now refraining from comment on the situation at the urgent request of Governor Gonatas. The papers, however, are featuring Premier Venizelos’ statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, reassuring the Jewish world.
The Jewish community today sent a message to Governor Gonatas expressing their unshakable loyalty to Greece following a newspaper allegation that part of the Jews of Saloniki are supporting Macedonian autonomy against Greece. The Jewish community recalled to the governor that Rabbi Jacob Meier of Jerusalem declared some time ago that the Salonican Jews are completely identified with a Hellenistic Macedonia.
