Samuel A. Telsey, prominent New York attorney, as today elected president of the HIAS to succeed the late Abraham Herman who died in March, Mr. Telsey has been associated with HIAS for 14 years, and during the past 3 years was a vice-president and chairman of the organization’s executive committee.
In the summer of 1933 when large-scale refugee movements began as a result of Hitler’s rise to power, Mr. Telsey went to Europe and helped organize the HIAS European headquarters in Paris. On his return to the U.S. he was among the first to (##)roclaim the dangers of Nazism and warned that conditions in Germany would soon insolve the entire world.
A report issued by HIAS executive director; Isaac L. Asofsky, at today’s meeting revealed that during the first three months of this year, HIAS sent 18,403 cash remittances amounting to $959,346 to Europe for relief and transportation of relatives of Americans. Mr. Asofsky also announced that during the three-month period HIAS effected 6,208 locations abroad and 5,010 locations in the United States.
Other officers elected by the board include: Solomon Dingol, managing editor of the Jewish Day, and Col. Murray I. Gurfein, former New York assistant district attorney, vice-presidents; Harry Fischel, treasurer; Samuel Goldstein, associate transurer; Benjamin J. Weinberg, honorary secretary; and Isaac L. Asofsky, HIAS executive director, secretary.
