Samuel Barnett, president of the Municipal Bank and Trust Company for the past seven years. died in Baltimore at the age of 57. He had been in a hospital in the city for the past three months.
Merger of the Municipal Bank which had resources of $80,000,000 with the Bank of United States, was formally ratified twenty-four hours before the death of Mr. Barnett who had built the bank up from a small institution at Stone and Pitkin Avenues, Brooklyn, to its present size with nearly twenty branches in Brooklyn.
Born in Russia in 1872, Mr. Barnett came to America alone when he was seventeen. After working as a clerk and for a manufacturer for $3 a week he formed a company to manufacture women’s wear. When he retired the company did a business of $3,500,000 annually.
Mr. Barnett was active in charitable organizations in Brooklyn. He is survived by his widow, a son and a daughter Funeral services will be held this morning from his late residence, 1.376 President Street, Brooklyn.
