J. Montague Lamport, aged 24, nephew of Samuel C. Lamport, was drowned off Belle Harbor. I. I. 8 A. M. Sunday Morning after having succeeded in the heroic rescue of four young girls who were caught in the tug of a powerful undertow. Young Lamport went to the rescue of the fourth girl after having brought the others to shore but the frantic actions of the girl in clinging to his neck from which he could not disentangle himself exhausted him. Help from shore saved the girl but young Lamport, weakened, was drawn out to sea. His body was recovered later and taken to his home at I West 93rd st., N. Y. C.
Lamport was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon and Annie Lamport, and a grandson of Nathan Lamport. He was a graduate of Brown University in 1924, and was a member of the varsity swimming team. He was a leader in the young set of the Society for Advancement of Judaism, an unusual Hebrew student, and was active in the Palestine Movement.
