More than 900 persons, including state, city and Israeli dignitaries and virtually all of the leaders of Jewish philanthropy and civic activity here, honored Samuel A. Goldsmith at a dinner here last night, in farewell upon his retirement from comprehensive Jewish professional leadership in this city for the past 36 years. Mr. Goldsmith will retire July 1 from his posts of executive vice-president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, the Jewish Welfare Fund and the Combined Jewish Appeal.
Among the principal speakers at the event were Lt. Gov. Samuel H. Shapiro; Mayor Richard J. Daley; Jacob Barmore, Israel’s Consul-General here, who presented to Mr. Goldsmith the Liberation Medal of Israel. Other speakers included Abram D. Davis, president, Jewish Federation; Morris Glasser president, Jewish Welfare Fund; and Edward L. Ryerson, Dean of Laymen in Private Welfare Work, who has been associated with Mr, Goldsmith in numerous communal projects. Flying in from California for the occasion was Isidore Sobeloff, executive vice-president of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation, and a professional colleague of Mr. Goldsmith for many years; and others. Special presentation of gifts was made by Joseph L. Gidwitz, immediate past president of the Jewish Federation and Harris Perlstein on behalf of the past presidents and the board of directors of the Jewish Federation, Jewish Welfare Fund and Combined Jewish Appeal.
