The High Commissioner, Sir Herbert Samuel arrived safely in Jerusalem yesterday after presiding at the exercises celebrating the inclusion in the Palestine territory of Mettulah, the northernmost Jewish colony.
Two more British gendarmes of the ten who were ambushed by Bedouins after escorting the High Commissioner, are dead of wounus. This makes a total of five dead, and one captured. It is now stated the brigands’ attack took place as the escort which served as a vanguard for the High Commissioner, who was with a near party, was proceeding north toward Mettulah, and not on its return trip south, as previous reports had it. The brigands, it is asserted also, were Bedouins from across the Jordan, and not members of a Palestine tribe.
Sir Herbert is leaving for London the end of this month for an extended vacation. Sir Gilbert Clayton, Civil Secretary, will act for the High Commissioner until the latter’s return in September.
Completion of arrangements for the Palestine loan and the jurisdiction of the local Jewish communities in Palestine, are among the questions the High Commissioner is expected to consider with the British government during his holiday.
