A fair employment practices ordinance, minus the customary jail sentence for discriminatory employers rejecting mediation, has been introduced for action by the city Board of Supervisors. The proposed ordinance is sponsored by the San Francisco Committee for Equal Job Opportunity, which is backed by more than 150 civic leaders representing all phases of community life.
In submitting the measure, the sponsoring Committee emphasized the safeguards provided for employers, particularly assurances that the legislation would not embarrass employers not guilty of discrimination. The proposed ordinance places its principal emphasis on education, discussion and conciliation. The measure, however, provides for resort to court action if conciliation processes fail.
