Steps to acquire and maintain abandoned Jewish cemeteries in the Mother Lode area in California, once a center of gold prospecting, have been taken up by a group of local Jewish leaders. The project backers, who include Justice Leonard Friedman and Rabbi Joseph Glaser, hope to develop a statewide committee for the effort.
A survey of the long-abandoned burial grounds has disclosed that many California Jewish pioneers who helped found Jewish communities now flourishing in northern California, are believed buried in the cemeteries. The Jewish leaders hope to acquire the cemeteries, restore them to proper conditions and maintain them as historic landmarks.
