Miss Sarah Kussy, a leader of Hadassah, died here yesterday after a short illness. She was 87 years old. She was among those who assisted the late Henrietta Szold in the establishment of the women’s group in 1912, and founded its first Newark chapter. Among other posts she had held was that of honorary vice president of the National Women’s League of the United Synagogue, and deputy member of the Jewish Agency.
A 1906 graduate of the Teachers Training School of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Miss Kussy had taught in both public and Hebrew schools for many years. Among the numerous honors which came to her for her communal service was the planting of 10,000 trees in Israel in 1950 by the Northern New Jersey Region of Hadassah and named the “Sarah Kussy Forest.”
