The Saudi Arabian Government withdrew today its agreement to accept Horace Phillips, a diplomat with long experience in that country, as Britain’s new Ambassador. Mr. Phillips, a Glasgow Scot, is of a Jewish family. His wife is non-Jewish. According to the Evening News, the Saudian action was the result of pressure brought to bear by Egypt. The designation of Mr. Phillips as Ambassador to Saudi Arabia was announced last January. He had been stationed in that country as first secretary and consul and later Counsellor in the British Embassy and was highly regarded in Jedda as an authority on the Middle East.
