The entire population of Savannah, Ga., non-Jewish as well as Jewish, mourned this week the sudden death of Mrs. Grace Sarah Mendes, who died of a heart attack. Mrs. Mendes had been ill for several months but was lately thought to be on the road to recovery.

Mrs. Mendes was the widow of Dr. Isaac P. Mendes, for many years rabbi of the Congregation Mickve Israel of Savannah, and has been a resident of Savannah for more than fifty years, taking an active part in many Jewish and communal undertakings. She was organizer of the Temple Sisterhood and of the local section of the Council of Jewish Women, of both of which organizations she was for many years the active head, was first president of the local Hadassah and a Board member of the Ladies’ Hebrew Benevolent Society, one of the oldest benevolent societies in the country. She was largely instrumental in organizing the Woman’s Club of the Jewish Educational Alliance. She was also active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Federation of Women’s Clubs and other non-Jewish organizations. When she celebrated her 75th anniversary in December the entire community paid her tribute.
