Chancellor Harry Woodburn Chase, of New York University, stated that “there are far more students taking pre – medical courses than can possibly be accommodated by medical colleges and only the better pre-medical students can get in.” Because of the great number of students, he said, many have to be weeded out. “It may be that some medical schools do discriminate against Jewish students but there are none to my knowledge,” he asserted.
“Of course,” he remarked, “there is no discrimination at New York University. I don’t even know what percentage of our medical students is Jewish. I suppose it is a fairly large percentage.”
Dr. McConaughy in a statement accompanying the letter denied that medical schools are anti-Semitic.
