The Ku Klux Klan will never be tolerated in American universities, declared Harold Riegelman of New York, National Executive of the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity in his annual report at the opening session of the twenty-fifth annual convention of the fraternity here.
Reviewing the history of the fraternity which was the first Jewish college society founded in America, Mr. Riegelman pointed to the large number of Jewish students taking part in college activities as proof of the fact that anti-Semitism is “non-existent” in American university life and that it could never thrive there.
“On the whole the status of Jewish college man is decidedly on the up grade, ” he reported. “Throughout the country the participation of Jewish students in both athletic and non-athletic activities has increased perceptibly and the lengthening list of campus honors accorded these participants is sufficient answer to those who view with skepticism the tolerance and liberality of the American college.
“The University man has marked preferencesand certain prejudices. But he has a level head and is neither a knave or a fool. Consequently he has no stomach for the Ku Klux Klan or any of its implications.”
Representatives of the fraternity from all over the country are attending its Silver Jubiles. Hon. Julius Kahn, Chairman of the House Military Committee, is Honorary President of the fraternity.
