The election of a Catholic or a Jew as the next President of the United States was advocated by Dr. John Haynes Holmes to provide a test of American religious liberty. In his sermon at Community Church on Sunday, on “Should a Roman Catholic be Elected President?” Dr. Holmes declared:

“The test of our democracy is not words but deeds. We say that we believe in religious liberty. The election of a Catholic to the Presidency would vindicate this belief. So would the election of a Jew.”
