The entry into the United Nations of five Arab States has placed the Jewish Problem in Palestine in an entirely new perspective, Moshe Shertok, chief of the Jewish Agency, said today, addressing a meeting of the Jewish Journalists Association.
Pointing to the activities of the Arab delegations at San Francisco, Shervak said that the Arabs’ appearance in the international arena strengthens Zionist demands for creation of a Jewish state in Palestine which would have a voice at international gatherings.
“Hitherto,” he said, “when we were reduced to lobbying at international conferences without being given a seat, we could console ourselves with the fact that we were appearing before a world tribunal only as claimants. But now one of the contending parties has been elevated to a judgeship, and occupies one of the seats on the bench.” Instead of merely having factors of expediency and practicability used as a basis to judge Jewish demands, he continued, there is a new factor operative-“a national will uncompromisingly hostile to ours.”
The Zionist aim now, shertok stressed, is not to achieve a symbol of independence, but full Jewish statehood. “We must have all of Palestine,” he said,”all its empty spaces and all its potentialities which only we can utilize efficiently.”
