“The Zionist movement has received a heavy blow, but it is not destroyed,” says Dr. Solomon B. Freehof, contributing editor of The American Israelite, in the leading editorial in that publication’s issue of October 30th. The editorial is entitled, “Has Zionism Collapsed?” and is based upon Great Britain’s recent declaration following Sir John Simpson’s Palestinian report.
“It is obvious that this decision (halting immigration) makes the hope of a Jewish Palestine an impossible one,” Dr. Freehof points out. “There are only 160,000 Jews in Palestine now. 2,000 more families will hardlly make a difference. The Jews will be permanently a small minority. How this decision is to be harmonized with what was always taken to be the implication of the Balfour Declaration is hard to see.”
However, says Dr. Freehof, the decision of the British government is not irrevocable, since another British party in office may initiate another policy and furthermore the League of Nations Mandates Commission has final authority in the matter.
