Rabbi Saul I. Teplitz, president of the Synagogue Council of America (SCA), said today that he is distressed by “the vituperative character” of some of the reporting in the Egyptian press in recent days which has been termed by Premier Menachem Begin of Israel as anti-Semitic.
Teplitz, who announced earlier that he will be leading an SCA delegation to Egypt to meet with Moslem, Christian and Jewish religious communities there, said the outpourings in the Egyptian press “underscores the importance of the forthcoming dialogue planned by the SCA delegation and Moslem religious leaders. We intend to point out to the Egyptian religious leadership and the Egyptian press the horrendous consequences of anti-Semitism and religious bigotry throughout history.”
The delegation was planning to leave for Egypt today and remain there till Feb. 2. However, Teplitz said the delegation will be leaving, instead, on Feb. 12. He explained the delay was caused by “logistical reasons.” The SCA is the national coordinating agency for the Conservative, Orthodox and Reform rabbinic and congregational organizations in the U.S.
