The foreign ministers of the Scandinavian countries expressed optimism here this week that progress will be achieved toward a permanent peace settlement in the Middle East despite grave obstacles that still exist. That view was contained in the official communique issued at the close of the ministers’ traditional meeting in the Icelandic capital. The nations represented were Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.

The ministers urged in their communique that the impetus toward “a just and lasting peace take into account all due considerations including the legitimate rights of the Palestinians.” The group stressed the role of international efforts to maintain the fragile peace in the Middle East and praised especially the contributions of the UN’s peace-keeping forces in the region.
