A sharp clash between Reichs Minister of Economics Schacht and Reichs Minister of the Interior Frick over the latter’s decree ordering police not to renew the licenses of Jewish traveling salesmen appeared imminent today when Dr. Schacht issued instructions to local officials throughout Germany to disregard Frick’s order.
Since the police are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior, it is considered unlikely that Dr. Schacht’s order will be obeyed, particularly in view of the fact that his instructions are not being published but are privately circulated.
Dr. Schacht’s intervention is based on the fact that no legislation has yet been passed by the Nazi Government interfering with Jews in commerce.
If his order goes unheeded, approximately 30,000 Jewish traveling salesmen throughout Germany will be deprived of their livelihood, since without permits they can not solicit orders in districts other than that in which the factory they represent is located. The order goes into effect Wednesday.
