Scholars from 14 Lands Conclude Parley on Jewish Life in Europe

Some 70 scholars from 14 countries closed a three-day Conference on Jewish Life in Contemporary Europe today with the creation of a committee to prepare and coordinate the studies on the situation of the various European countries discussed during the sessions.

In approving a program for future research, the delegates decided to start a study of the political, philosophical and religious views of students. A study group on research in social psychology, sociology and history in relation to contemporary Judaism also was recommended. The scholars also agreed that the dissemination of various scientific studies by institutions and individual scholars should be encouraged. Another proposal was the translation of studies of international interest. The delegates also decided to publish the reports, discussions and conclusions adopted during the conference.

The conference was organized jointly by the Institute of Contemporary Jewry of the Hebrew University and the National Center for Higher Jewish Studies at Prussels University, Countries represented included Belgium, Denmark, France, West Germany, Britain, Yugoslavia. The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Israel, Italy, Portugal, the United States and Switzerland.
