Three hundred scholars from 15 overseas countries began intensive discussion today with some 500 Israeli scholars on various areas of Jewish studies including the contemporary Jewish history of the Nazi regime. They were attending the fifth World Congress of Jewish Studies.
Speaking last night at the opening session, in behalf of the visiting scholars, Prof, W.D. Davies of the United States deplored the fact that there was a gap between Jewish and Gentile scholars in the field. The American scholar said that this gap had prevented progress in a wide area of studies and declared that “we need each other.”
Present at the opening session of the conference were President Zalman Shazar, Mayor Teddy Kollek of Jerusalem and President Avraham Harman of the Hebrew University.
