The Hebrew University of Jerusalem plans to name its new institute for European studies after German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
Israel’s ambassador to Germany, Avi Primor, said last Friday that the gesture was to thank Kohl for his long support of Israel. Primor said Kohl deserved special merit for helping win a “privileged status” for Israel in its relations with the European Union at last year’s E.U. summit in Essen, Germany.
Kohl is due to visit Israel next month.
Rita Sussmuth, president of the lower house of the German Parliament, is now in Israel on an official visit to mark 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
