All schools throughout the country reopened today after the summer vocation period, except the elementary schools which postponed their reopening until September 14, the day following Rosh Hashanah.
Premier David Ben Gurion has appointed a committee to study various problems concerning higher education, including the coordination of the programs of the Hebrew University, Weizmann Institute of Science and Haifa Technological Institute. The committee will seek to raise the level of research in academic education and coordinate scientific research with the country’s development and security programs.
The problem of attracting Jewish scientists and religious scholars from abroad to Israel, as well as of encouraging Jewish students to go abroad to complete their studies, will also be dealt with by the committee. Gen. Yaacov Dori, former Chief of Staff of the Israel Army, is chairman of the committee, which has among its members leading educators from all Israel institutions of higher learning.
