Boris Thomashefsky, noted Yiddish actor, will appear on the English-speaking stage on Broadway during the coming season. Mr. Thomashefsky will make his debut on Sept. 7 at the Selwyn Theatre in “The Singing Rabbi”, a musical comedy which he himself has written. His son, Harry Thomashefsky, will manage the production. Regina Zuckerberg, who has been playing Yiddish stellar roles with Mr. Thomashefsky for many years, will be featured in this production. The supporting company, however, will consist entirely of Broadway players.
Mr. Thomashefsky declares that he is leaving the Yiddish stage because it “has found itself without a sufficient audience to support its drama”.
Another noted Yiddish actor who will appear on Broadway during the coming season is Maurice Schwartz, former director of the Yiddish Art Theatre, who will open a season in English at the Ambassador Theatre on Sept. 21. The first play in which Mr. Schwartz will appear on Broadway will be “If I Were You,” a translation of Sholem Aleichem’s comedy, “Shver tsu Zain A Yid”. In a statement which he has issued Mr. Schwartz declares that lack of a fund which would assure a permanent existence to the Yiddish Art Theatre compels him to abandon the Yiddish stage temporarily.
