Maurice Schwartz, hopeful and amiable although somewhat depressed that he was not to have a company in New York next season despite fifteen years of effort to establish a permanent Yiddish Art Theatre in this country, forsook the East for Hollywood and the rest of the world on Saturday.

In Hollywood Schwartz will direct a talkie under the banner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who have offered him a voice in the selection of one of six scenarios now under consideration.

YOSHE KALB VS. DYBBUK

Schwartz plans to stay in Hollywood six months. He will go to Europe, Palestine, possibly South Africa and South America. In Europe he hopes to organize a road company which he can take on tour with the repertoire of the Yiddish Art Theatre, which means that Jerusalem and Capetown will probably be discussing Yoshe Kalb vs. the Dybbuk next spring.

“Please don’t assume that because I am going away I feel that this is not the time for the establishment of a company which will give the better kind of play in Yiddish,” Schwartz told reporters. “If ever there was a time for such a theatre this is it. An I hope that in my absence there will be those who will be able to summon up the wherewithal to organize such a theatre and to keep it going.

ALWAYS READY TO HELP

“No matter where I shall be, I shall always be ready to help with everything at my command. Not having to worry about a company for a few months will give me the opportunity to rest and to study the world’s theatre. I know that I shall return with much new strength and knowledge of the better stage, to which I have devoted all these years,” Schwartz concluded.

Schwartz has appointed a personnel to prepare for the opening of a theatre in the fall of 1935.
