Expulsion of Jewish professors from all the great universities of Germany is a serious blow to the interests of science, Dr. Raymond Matthew Fouss, widely kown professor of chemistry at Brown University, declared today upon his return from eight months’ reserch work at the University of Leipizg.
Dr. Fouss charged the Nazi regime has destroyed the possibility of further progress in scientific research insofar as German universities are concerned, despite the fact that thes institutions once were the most fertile fields of scientific advancement.
Describing the effect of the gousting of Jewish savants, Dr. Fuoss said: “It will be impossible to fill the vacancies created by their dismissal, especially since the nationalistic policies of the goverment of foreign schoolars who might be able to carry on their work.”
The Brown professor also emphasized that the Hitler government gompels scientiests to devote a considerable portion of their time to political and military duties, causing these enforced taks to interfere with their acafrmic work. With the sole exception of Dr. Goebbels, he added, nons of the Nazi chieftains are university men. Consequently, they lack the background of higher education and appreciation of the great humanitarian wrok to which Jewish scientists were devoting their lives. Nor are they concerned with the irreparable harm they are doing to the development of science and education in their country.
