The National Geographic Society yesterday reported new evidence to support a theory by Prof. Albert Einstein that gravity can bend light rays. Dr. Einstein’s theory, offered nearly 50 years ago as one of the proofs of his theory of relativity, explained the apparent bending of stars’ light passing near the sun on the basis of gravitational pull.
The National Geographic Society sent Dr. George van Biesbroeck, noted astronomer of the University of Chicago to Khartoum, in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, twice this year to photograph the heavens and measure the bending of star’s rays Dr. Biesbroeck’s computations checked with Dr. Einstein’s predictions to within three percent. Dr. Einstein refused to comment on Dr. Biesbroeck’s findings until he had examined the astronomer’s reports on his trips.
