No official action was taken by the British Association, foremost scientific institute, upon a suggestion made at yesterday’s session, by a delegate, that the Association send a message of sympathy to Professor Albert Einstein now in seclusion in England.
The suggestion was made unexpectedly by a scientist present at the meeting of the mathematical section of the Association, which was discussing the Einstein theory. He asked the meeting to pass upon a vote of sympathy for Professor Einstein. The chairman of the section intervened and asked that the vote be postponed for a day, in order to enable a committee to consider the matter. Since a vote would have meant a discussion on the German situation generally, the committee declined to take any action.
It was understood however, that several prominent physicists who attended the meetings of the British Association, have written privately to Professor Einstein, expressing their deep sympathy with his present trouble.
A few days ago the European press announced that a secret Nazi organization had placed a price upon Professor Einstein’s head. He left the Belgian resort where he had been staying and came to England where he is now in seclusion at the country estate of Commander Oliver Locker-Lamoson.
