On the premises of the Jewish Board of Guardians, there convenes here twice a week a Jewish Eeclesiastical Court known as the Beth Din but the court has no legal status and cannot enforce the penalties which it may impose.
However, whether it is due to respect for the three bearded rabbis who preside or to a desire to avoid the civil courts, many disputes are brought before the Beth Din. It is entirely a voluntary venture. The people come voluntarily, yet decisions handed down by the court are seldom disregarded.
