A Scud missile fired from Iraq landed in the northern West Bank early Thursday evening.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the weapon, which is believed to have carried a conventional warhead of high explosives.

No Patriot anti-missile missiles appear to have been fired in response to the attack.

Israel Defense Force crews were said to be searching for debris in the area of impact, which was identified only as the Samaria region.

The missile alert was the first in three nights and the missile was the second in succession to hit the Arab-populated West Bank.

The first exploded Monday night in an olive orchard on the outskirts of Deir Balut village. No one was hurt.

Thursday’s alert, sounded at 6 p.m. local time, caught Foreign Minister David Levy in a Jerusalem theater, where he was about to address a group of Jewish visitors from France.

After rushing backstage to get his gas mask, the foreign minister said Saddam Hussein did not care if he hit Jews in Israel or Arabs in the territories.

An all-clear was sounded for most of the country about 15 minutes later, but residents in areas east of Tel Aviv and north of Jerusalem were instructed to remain in their gas-proof rooms with their gas masks on.
