Seaboard Region Prepares for Its U. P. A. Campaigns

Over 350 representatives from cities in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina, are attending the fourth annual Palestine conference of the Seaboard Region, which will continue until tomorrow night.

Dr. N. Rosenstein. Chairman of the local committee; J. Elmer Long, Lieutenant-Governor of North Carolina, and Associate Justice W. J. Brogden, of the North Carolina Supreme Court, welcomed the guests. Harry T. Kellman, Chairman of the Atlantic States Zionist Federation, presided.

Louis Lipsky, President of the Zionist Organization of America, addressed the opening session.

At the second session the quotas for the various cities in the United Palestine Appeal were assigned. H. L. Caplan presided. Mrs. Israel Shapiro, Chairman of the Hadassah Seaboard unit, addressed the session.

The report and recommendations of Simon J. Levin, Supervisor and Samuel Sokols were considered.

The principal speakers at the mass meeting Sunday night were Josephus Daniels, of Raleigh, Secretary of the Navy during the Wilson administration, and Louis Lipsky. Mrs. Israel Shapiro, Rabbi Louis J. Schwefel, of Washington. D. C., and Harry T. Kellman, of Baltimore, addressed the meeting.

A luncheon will be given today in honor of Louis Lipsky.

U.P.A. PASSES $1,000,000 MARK IN NEW YORK

The sum of $1,000,000 has been raised towards the Greater New York United Palestine Appeal for $2,500,000 it was announced at the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of the Jewish National Fund, which took place Sunday evening at Mecca Temple. Morris A. Zeldin, director of the New York Appeal, in reporting the first million mark exceeded in this campaign declared the results so far this year to be most encouraging.

Organizations that keep their memberships secret would be banned from North Carolina and wearing of masks or hoods in public that conceal the identity of the wearer would be forbidden by a bill that passed the North Carolina House of Representatives on Saturday without a dissenting vote. Similar unanimous action was taken by the Senate several days ago.

The bill, introduced in both branches of the Legislature by men who said they were former members of the Ku Klux Klan, followed closely on the recent resignation of Superior Court Judge Henry A. Grady of Clinton as Grand Dragon of the Klan in North Carolina.

Anne Nichols, author and producer of “Abie’s Irish Rose”, signed a contract with the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, following months of negotiations, for the screen production of her comedy. Adolph Zukor and Jesse L. Lasky represented the film company.

The World Union of Sephardic Jews, whose headquarters are in Jerusalem, is preparing a history of the Sephardic and other Eastern Jews in Palestine. The book will appear in the summer.
