Warning against the danger to democracy in the “tendency to seek a scapegoat in a religious or racial or political or economic group” was sounded here last night by Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy. The warning was voiced in the course of his first public address since his elevation to the Supreme Court, made before the Alumni Association of the New York University Law School.
“Of such tendencies and beliefs,” he said, “dictatorships are born. On such attitudes, demagogues rely for their march to power. In the soil of dissension and mistrust the seeds are sown which blossom into destruction for the reign of law and justice–for all that is fine and enlightened in the relations of man to man.”
