The British transport Empire Rival today landed 784 Jewish deportees from Palestine at this port. The refugees, of whom there were 542 men, 237 women and five children, had arrived in Palestine aboard the Caf Gimnel and were deported Sunday morning.
Several of the deportees were taken off the ship on stretchers and a doctor said that many of them were ill. There were 30 pregnant women among the arrivals. Most of the Jews are from Poland or Germany.
Under an amendment to the Cypriot immigration law promulgated today firearms may be used to halt escaping Jews or to break up gatherings which are “liable to disturb the peace.”
