Secretary of State Dean Acheson has rejected an appeal by 51 Congressmen who had asked his cooperation in halting the Near East arms race. Rep. Anthony Tauriello, of New York, to whom Mr. Acheson’s reply was addressed, made the Secretary’s response known today.
Mr. Acheson emphasized that Britain’s supply of arms to the Arab countries is not facilitated, “directly or indirectly, by the settlement of that country’s lendlease account, the mutual defense assistance program, or E.C.A. aid.” Replying to a suggestion from the Congressional group that Point Four aid be extended only to Arab states which have reached peace settlements with Israel, Mr. Acheson said the State Department “believes it would be undesirable to use this program as an instrument of political pressure.”
