A severe attack against the Soviet Government for suppressing Jewish cultural life in the U.S. S.R. was made here today by Secretary of Labor Maurice J. Tobin, addressing a dinner of Yeshiva University at the Waldorf-Astoria.
“The Soviet tyrants, ” Secretary Tobin said, “have added their names to the long list of those who tried to crush the Jewish heritage. And like every other tyrant on that list, they will fail. The heritage will live on, after the tyrants have perished. Two thousand years of persecution have not crushed it and it can withstand anything the Soviet leaders can devise. “
The Secretary of Labor emphasized that “today the future of Jewish heritage, the future of Judaism itself, is closely linked to the cause of the free world. ” Only in the free world, he said, can institutions like Yeshivah University take root and grow. He lauded the University as “an expression of the historic dedication of the Jew to the things of the mind and the things of the spirit. “
