Secretary of State James F. Byrnes today expressed surprise at a report from London which appeared today in the New York Times, stating that the British Government intends to withdraw the conditions attached by Prime Minister Attlee to acceptance of the recommendation of the Anglo-American inquiry committee that 100,000 Jews be admitted to Palestine. Mr. Byrnes said that he has no information on the Times report. Charles G. Ross, the White House press secretary, also disavowed any knowledge of the story.
The Times correspondent reported that exchanges between President Truman and Prime Minister Attlee and the State Department and the Foreign Office, conducted through the United States Embassy in London, have resulted in an agreement that there will be no further negotiations with Arabs and Jews after their replies to the British invitation for their views on the report of the inquiry committee are received. The deadline for these answers is June 20.
