U.N. mediator Count Folke Bernadotte has announced that the Israeli Government has agreed to his proposal to thrash out the difficult Jerusalem situation, it was revealed here today on the heels of an announcement yesterday that the Security Council has been summoned into emergency session tomorrow afternoon to consider the possible use of sanctions in Palestine, Jerusalem remains as the only major front where the Security Council truce is not operative.
Tomorrow’s Council session was called following receipt by the U.N. of a series of questions by Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok, asking that the Council clarify its most recent truce instructions. Shertok asked whether the Council’s orders against retaliatory fighting might not actually encourage violations of the truce.
He also wanted to know whether the Council intended to apply sanctions against violators, or if not what other form of redress the Council will make to offended parties who may not retaliate. The Israeli Minister also asked for further clarification of a ruling that political or military advantages accruing from violation of the truce shall not be permitted to become permanent.
The U.S. delegation is uninstructed on this point, a spokesman for the delegation declared this week-end. The Council had adjourned for the month until September when it was scheduled to sit in Paris, previous to yesterday’s special summons.
