The U.N. Security Council today rejected an Arab move to refer the Palestine issue to the International Court of Justice.
With seven favorable votes needed for adoption of the resolution, the final vote was six for, one against and four abstentions. Voting for the resolution were Syria, China, Argentina, Belgium, Colombia and the United Kingdom, while voting negatively was the Ukraine. The abstaining nations were the U.S., U.S.S.R., Canada and France, all of whom expressed their opposition to the resolution.
Calling for the defeat of the proposal, Israeli representative Aubrey Etan asserted that submission of the Palestine issue to the international tribunal would cause further delay, uncertainty and bitterness. It would also encourage the resumption of hostilities, he added.
