The U.N. Security Council today started its debate on the Syrian complaint against Israel’s Jordan River hydroelectric project.
Gen. Vagn Bennike, U.N. truce chief in Palestine, told the Security Council that a certain amount of water within the borders of Syria would be diverted from the Jordan River by the Israel project. He made this statement in reply to a question by Zafrullah Khan, representative of Pakistan.
The Pakistan delegate delivered a long legalistic address in an effort to defend the Syrian complaint. The debate will continue next week. The Security Council invited Ambassador Abba Eban to attend today’s discussion.
