The Security Council is scheduled to meet Friday to grant a one-year extension to the UN Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai. The present mandate expires Sunday. The extension of the mandate of the 4174-man force is expected to pass smoothly. Israel and Egypt, sources here indicated, have already given their approval to the extension. Council members will start consultations on the matter tomorrow.
Secretary General Kurt Waldheim yesterday had recommended another one-year extension of UNEF. In a report to the Security Council, covering the 12-month period since the mandate was last extended by the Council, he noted that the presence of UNEF was a major factor in maintaining the cease-fire established after the Yom Kippur War and reaffirmed by the Israeli-Egyptian interim Sinai pact in September 1975.
