The United Nations Security Council met in emergency session on a resolution calling for peace in the Middle East.
The United States-drafted resolution discussed Saturday calls on the Israelis and Palestinians to fulfill their obligations under the Annapolis peace deal and requires interested parties, including other nations and international organizations, to support the negotiations.
The resolution calls for a two-state solution comprised of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine.
A final vote on the resolution by the 15 ministers representing the member countries is scheduled to be held Tuesday.
The Annapolis peace process, backed by the Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators comprised of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations, had set a deadline of the end of this year. George Bush will leave office on Jan. 20.
