Asserting that the sedition trial here is the result of a petition submitted by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise to President Roosevelt in which action against the alleged seditionists was demanded, James J. Laughlin, attorney for two of the defendants, Edward J. Smythe and Robert Noble, today stated in District court that he had intended to summon Rabbi Wise as a witness. Laughlin, who is being tried for contempt of court, said that the petition was signed by 500,000 persons.
