A proposal to recognize civil marriages in Maryland again was placed before the General Assembly.
The bill, which had been introduced at previous sessions, made its appearance this time under the sponsorship of Delegates Emanuel Gorfine and Richard M. Baker, both of Baltimore.
It would provide, as others have in the past, that couples could be married by judges, clerks of all courts of record and the Mayors of towns. The proposal was sent to the Judiciary Committee.
As the law in Maryland now stands, only a rabbi or a clergyman can perform a wedding ceremony.
