An attempt will be made to reduce still further the Government contribution to Jewish schools in Latvia, it has been indicated here by the Minister of Education.
To Jewish representatives who interviewed the Minister of Education on the subject, he declared that up till recently 10 per cent of the pupils belonging to national minorities have attended Latvian schools. This year the number of Jewish pupils in Latvian schools has increased considerably, and it is therefore the intention of the Government, he said, to reduce proportionately the Government subsidy to Jewish schools.
The education budget in itself will not be changed, but a certain change will take place in distributions.
In accordance with the law, national minorities receive subsidies for education in accordance with the proportion of their population, but this the Minister now finds to be unjustified, since a number of the national minorities pupils attend Latvian schools. The Minister of Education gave an assurance, however, that although the matter had been under discussion by the Cabinet, no decision had yet been arrived at.
