Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and American High Commissioner for Germany James B. Conant were urged today to investigate charges by the West German Social Democratic Party that there are more than 20 German publishers issuing memoirs of leading Nazis and other literature glorifying the barbarous acts of the Nazis.
The request for the investigation was made by the Jewish Labor Committee which declared, in a communication to Secretary Dulles, that “if we are to combat Soviet imperialism, we cannot do it effectively by permitting West Germany to give official sanction to the deification of another totalitarian power. Scholars of history have sufficient evidence with which to weigh and evaluate Nazism without the drumbeating of the literary storm troopers.” The JLC also asked whether the denazification policies in Germany had failed.
