A law to censor libelous anti-Jewish propaganda in the press was demanded today in a memorandum submitted to the Austrian government by the Jewish Volksbund here.
The memorandum emphasizes that such legislation is necessary in order to secure protection for the Jews against inflammatory attacks which the Nazi press in Austria is now conducting.
The Neuewelt, a German Jewish newspaper published by Dr. Robert Stricker, well-known Jewish leader, today published an article complaining that all efforts to prosecute the Nazi papers in court for their false allegations against the Jews are useless under the present laws which provide no opportunity for bringing a libel suit against anti-Jewish slanders.
“The anti-Semitic attacks which the Nazi newspapers in Austria are now conducting supersede the Jew-baiting propaganda conducted by the notorious Julius Streicher in his publication Der Stuermer in Nuremberg,” the Neuewelt points out. Something must be done by the government to enable Jews to seek redress and to halt the libelous campaign which the Nazi press in Austria is now conducting against the Jews and which is assuming dangerous proportions, the Neuewelt demands.
